My car shut off a couple weeks ago, after I put the code reader up to it, it said something about the camshaft in the fourth valve. (Minded I never had issues with the vehicle, always ran strong) So, I changed the spark plugs and put a new battery in, the engine light is still on, the main problem is I can start the car, but it's rough, the muffler makes a wired farting noise. When I rev it, it sounds normal. But as soon as I change gear it'll shake really hard and shuts off.

Hi,

What code did you retrieve? Also, the strange exhaust sound could be from a plugged catalytic converter. Is it loud enough for you to record and upload for me to hear?

Let me know. Also, take a look through this link and let me know if there is anything that mirrors what you experience:

I will watch for your reply.

Take care,

Joe

I just took this video today; I don't see anything leaking. It stays neutral. It just shuts off when I in reverse or drive. I don't remember the code and I don't have a code reader at the moment sorry. But what I do know and remember is that there is a misfire. I was told to change the coil pack as well, but I don't want to keep spending money on things that isn't the problem. I was also thinking it could be the camshaft sensor I'm not sure. The car was in perfect condition (and I mean no noises at all, sometimes I would forget the car is on) before a fender bender accident I had about 2 months ago. I didn't notice an major changes in the engine it just started jerking a little when I started it but it wasn't continuous. I just went to move the car one day and it all happened.

Hi,

Listening to the exhaust, I do hear what appears to be a misfire. If you could get your hands on a scanner, it would really be helpful. Rather than purchasing a new coil pack, we can switch the one from the cylinder missing to a different cylinder. Then, if the misfire changes cylinders, we know it's the coil.

However, without a code, I don't know which one to tell you to switch.

Let me know if you can possibly get a scanner. I believe you simply have a misfire issue.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

It's showing no codes, correct?

Do me a favor. Go through the delete code procedure and see if the check engine light turns off. If it does, drive it and see if it returns. If it does, scan it again.

Let me know.

I can't drive it; it stalls when I put it in gear. It barely stays on. It's a pain to turn it on, it turns over, but it'll shutter and shut off.

Taylor,

Can the scanner provide live data? If so, check to see what the coolant temperature sensor is indicating.

Let me know.

Hi, just updating, I ended up getting it towed to the garage. They are still looking into it but so far, they are considering it to be needing a new engine because they hear a knocking. They say there is no oil and yes, the oil change is 2 months past due. They are still looking into it but that's what I know.

Thank you for the update. As far as the knocking, that could indicate a connecting rod bearing or main bearing that is worn. It would be less expensive to find a good used engine if that is the case.

Here is a link you may find of interest. It discusses engine noises and causes.

Let me know how things turn out for you or if you have questions.

Take care,

Alright so I have another update, the first thing they said is that the engine is fine, it's not done, but they did detect a code (p0354) ignition coil D primary/secondary malfunction. They said as well the ticking is of course due to no oil and that's what I know for now. He said that they are going to focus on the code first and go from there.

Hi,

Was that code ever produced when you scanned the vehicle? It is specific to a cylinder 4 issue which is the misfire you have.

In most cases, the coil needs to be replaced, but there can be a wiring issue or ECM issue.

Let me know.

They talked about a new engine again, they said that in the first cylinder there is oil leaking, there is no compression that's why it keeps stalling in gear. I asked him what broke for the leak to cause, and he said he didn't know they he would have to take it apart and look but he said at this point I can't do much for the engine, that it would be more efficient to get a new one. So, I'm not sure.

Hi,

The compression has me confused. Did he indicate there was no compression or low compression? As far as no compression, that would indicate a valve is stuck open. Low compression could be from worn rings or a head gasket.

Interestingly, where there is low compression, we do what is called a wet-compression test where oil is added to the cylinder to see if the compression increases. The oil helps seal worn piston rings which leads to higher pressure.

Let me know. I'm really curious to know if it is low or no compression. If in fact, it is no, I would have them remove the valve cover to see if there is a stuck or damaged valve.

Let me know.
