Transmission problem

Hi, I have a 1997 Mercury Sable with a 3.0 liter and automatic transmission. It has about 125,000 miles on it. The transmission just stopped working without any warning. It will shift on the column and the lever on top of the transaxle will move accordingly but the engine never seems to move out of park. I can put the car in neutral and push it with out any problem. The transmission fluid is a brownish red, but can't I really tell if it smells burnt. I would appreciate anything you could tell me.

Thank you.

Hi there,

well you have already check what I would have suggested already. The trans oil sounds a little sad, but I feel there has been a failure in the torque converter, or an internal failure in the transmission, I don't think that there is anything else that you can do.
