I have a 1996 Mercury sable wagon with a 3.0 V6 with 120k miles on it. The problem I have is that I have change the thermostat, cooling fans and flushed the system but, it still overheats when the outside temperature gets above freezing. Can someone help? The car runs well but, this makes being stuck in heavy traffic a nightmare.

Do the fans work? Also have it chemical tested for a blown head gasket

Yes, the fans are working properly. A quick question, if the head gasket was blown and /or leaking wouldn't I be expending coolant? Coolant level stays the same. Just a thought. Also, when on defrost is being used, a/c blows cold air out of defrost but is mixed with heat. Also, is there possibly a computer chip somewhere which might have an effect on engine temperature.

Engine temperature sensor.

But when I had this occur on my 92 Merc Sable it was due to a failed water pump. No circulation of the coolant means that the car will overheat.

Having it chemical tested will tell a lot more about the circulation of your coolant than just head gasket issues. Might be air in the system, no flow through the water pump, etc.
