1997 Sable 93K miles 3.0L 24Valve DOHC. Alternator shows 13.1v when running, mechanic told me his test shows bad diode. I've heard there are a couple of ways to get the thing out and in again, go in from the top (removing A/C) or from underneath (removing drive shaft). I have no air tools. What is the best way to accomplish what looks like a tough job? Or, should I have it done in the shop?

If those are the choices, pulling the a/c compressor would be easiest, especially if you dont have to disconnect the lines and can just move it enough to get the alt out. If the lines have to be removed or you go in from the bottom, a shop would be better equipped to handle it
