Suspension problem
1997 Mercury Marquis 145000 miles

I'm trying to replace the lower ball joint on this car (I just bought it from a friend of the family).

I took the tire off, removed the brake calipers, disconnected the sway bar, disconnected the steering control linkage, and disconnected the upper control arm.

I tried to get the steering knuckle off but the stud of the lower ball joint is completely STUCK in it!

I have tried a lot of things. I've tried hammering the stud, I've tried using a pickle fork, I've applied a penetrating oil which removed all of the rust... I've tried all three of these in combination and finally I've purchased a three pound hammer and whaled on the pickle fork with it. The end of the pickle fork is becoming more and more blunt and as I run out of breath I wonder why it is stuck and just how am I going to get it off.

I'm pretty sure a jackhammer could do the job... other than that I can hardly imagine.

I have to wear hearing protection while hammering it and I'm not able to work on it that often because of neighborhood noise restrictions.

I haven't used the full limit of my strength against it yet because I'm seriously afraid of damaging the car.

Usually if they are stuck that bad a little bit of heat will free it. Heat up the spindle where the ball joint goes through, then use your pickle fork. Let the spindle cool on its own after it is apart

So you mean I should heat the steering knuckle where the ball joint stud is passing through it?

I'm guessing if I heat it up it will expand a little causing it to break off of the balljoint stud?

Question: what tool should I use for this? I've never used a blow torch or anything before.

A blow torch may be a bit too much. You can get MAP gas at a hardware store, it burns hotter than a regular propane torch

So I just heat it up and hit with a hammer.

If the ball joint is seized on the knuckled and you have tried to pry it out without success, you can also use a ball joint press/puller (see diagram below).
