I have a 1996 cougar and when I check my oil it sometimes doesn't show any on the dipstick, however, if I change oil, I get the 5+ quarts to come out of the oil pan. What length should the dip stick be? I am wondering if the wrong dipstick was inserted in the engine. I bought it used.

Thank you.

Hello -

Well that is a good question and kind of an interesting one. You would certainly think if it showed up sometimes on the dip stick it should show up all the time.

I am only asking... Not trying to insult here... But each time you check it, it is on level ground and the engine has been shut off for a little to allow all the oil to drain down, and it is inserted all the way down until it is seated and then pulled back out again?

Have you added oil when you can't see it..... Or when you don't see it, you drain it right then and have the 5+ quarts?

I don't have access to the part number of the dip stick. The best thing is to call the parts department and see if they have a dip stick in stock... Then stop by and bring yours in and see if it is the same length.
