Engine Mechanical problem
1996 Mercury Cougar 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 103k miles

Recently the fuel pump failed in my 96 Cougar. Knowing the check engine light had been neglected to be digagnosed for many months prior, the following repairs have been made. New fuel pump, fuel filter, air filter, O2 sensors, Mas Air flow sensor, spark plugs, battery. The check engine light is now off, the car idles smooth, greatly increased fuel miliage, no hesitation on exceleration and a pleasure to drive. Trouble only comes on a cold start especially below 40 degrees or so. Crank it over and it will try to start but die, over & over. Eventually will start and run well. Once engine warms to operating temp it starts first time every time.

With the repairs outlined above the car runs good as the day I got it. But without any error codes for clues this cold start problem has got me stumped ! Thanks in advance for any help.

Since its a cold start issue I would suspect a bad coolant temperature sensor right away, you can test it by comparing the reistance with that of the iac module

with the engine cold of course they should be similar values.

If that is good check the cold start sensor if equiped.
