I want to buy a Meecury Cougar with a 390 cu v8 6.4l engine. Being a way to high litre engine to insure and any price I could afford, I would like to know if a smaller v6 2.8l or 3.3l, sort of area, engine will got in this car? If so what engines will fit this car and how much would it cost to pay the machanic to swap them for me?

Why don't you buy a cougar with a 289 or 302 in it instead of the 390 you'll destroy the value of the cougar with a 390 in it. Plus it will cost a lot to have it done or do it to begin with.

What if it wasn't a Mercury Cougar? Any pony or muscle car would do? Do all the engines v8 and v6 fit in any type of 70s 80s muscle car? It's hard to find them with a v6 already in. What would the engine conversation cost and how much would the v6 engine cost itself?

V6is anywhere from $600 used to 3500 or more new like I said in the previous reply you would completely destroy the value of an older muscle car by putting the ening you want in it plus you can figure another 4-5000 for install and getting it hooked up. If you are intent on going to a V6 then go with a mustang 2 or fox body if you can find one The older muscle cars never came with a V6 in them anyhow they either had a 6 cyl, V8 small block or V8 big block. What you are asking is not only a complete waste of time but money also. But it's your prerogative so have at it.
