Truck starts and idles good but when under load, (eg. going up hill) starts to cough. If accelerator is held down while going up hill it starts to cough and die. When leaving an intersection or stop sign and accelerator is held down it will also cough and die. Acts like it isn't getting enough fuel. Have replaced fuel filter and fuel pump, spark plugs, plug wires, rotar and cap. PLEASE HELP!

Try checking the igition coil....feel the bottom of it and see if there is a high level of corrosion on the bottom of the coil and check for any fluid leaking out of hte coil.

Its either that or some sort of fuel probelm.

I take it that it is a 5sp carb engine right?

Thank you for your prompt reply. Yes it is a carburated engine but I am unsure of what 5sp means

What Cosmo means with the 5sp is-its a 5speed manual transmission.

For your problem, check the acelerator pump on the Carb-when you manually engage the throttle you should see a stream of gas coming from the acc. nozzle

Thank you to all for responding to my problem. I have since this conversation had a friend look at my truck. After every last dime I put in for all those new parts we have fixed the problem. If you can imagine, after we had replaced the fuel filter, we had to put more gas in because of all the test runs and it seems I ended up with bad gas. It ran very nice when we replaced everything for about 3 days and that was when the problem started again and after hours of cleaning and replacing someone had said to re-check what we had done and low-and-behold the fuel filter was totally plugged. We replaced it again and have had no further problems, geesh...

Suggested Repair

The problem was contaminated fuel that plugged a newly installed fuel filter. Replace the fuel filter again and use fresh fuel. Also check the ignition coil for corrosion or leaking fluid, and verify the carburetor accelerator pump sprays fuel when the throttle is opened.

Conversation Summary

A 1988 Mazda B2200 carbureted truck idled normally but coughed and died under load, such as climbing hills or accelerating from a stop, despite a new fuel filter, fuel pump, plugs, wires, rotor, and cap. Experts suggested checking the ignition coil for corrosion or leakage and confirming accelerator-pump spray from the carburetor. The owner later found bad fuel had plugged the replacement filter; installing another filter resolved the problem.
