Just did an oil change, couldn't find info on how much oil to put back in and the lighting was so poor so couldn't see very well on the dip stick. I think I put in 5L. Car is away from me for the next three months and will only be driven lightly. Is it an issue to let her drive, even lightly, with too much oil in the system? Awkward. Regards

Hi there,

These engines take aprox 3.5 litres, so the 5 + is a bit to muck to leave in, I would try to get someone to drop some of the oil out of the car.

Thanks will try and get that done asap. I am interested to know what negative effects too much oil in the system may incur?

If you over fill the engine with oil, (depending on how much extra) you can increase crankcase pressure and blow out seals, if extreme you can break crankshafts s the shaft strikes oil, (i have seen this firsthand).

P.S. Your over fill is minimal, I once had a car towed in because it wouldn't turn over, the owner changed the oil and said that they topped it up, up to the top of the oil filler. Now that was an extreme oil change!

Thanks, I assumed overfill would induce a pressure increase in the system ths putting seal at risk. Interesting concerning the potential for crank shaft damage. I see now how ths could occur. I wish the oil capacity was specifies in the owners manual!
