My car has been making a squealing noise when I either turn on the heater or AC, usually when I am stopped or just sarting to accelerate. It also happens in the morning or when it is raining. When I hear the squealing I can turn off the heater or AC and the squealing stops. A lot of the time it is when I turn on the defrost in the morning on my way to work. Any suggestion as to what this may be?

If it's comming from inside the car, it's the heater blower motor, if under the hood, The a/c pulley bearing or the serpentine belt(fan) and tensioner pulley

Thanks for the response. I am lloking at taking my car in to fix this.

It is coming from under the hood as the fan goes on when the heater is on so I am gussing it is the serpentine belt and tensioner pulley.

It is a 2000 mazda protege 1.6L with 122,000 miles on it. I did have the timing belt service done on the car, could this have something to do with the noise?

If I get it fixed what is a price range for the parts and service?

Thanks

Doubtful that the timing belt would make the noise, they have teeth, and don't slip. Serp belts are ribbed and can slip. Test the a/c clutch and bearing while you do the serp and tensioner.
