I tested with a screwdriver from the SP wire to ground and the coil wire to ground - no spark.
The engine turns over rapidly nut does not catch.

It had been idling rough and eventually would not start w/o starter fluid. Has been sitting since Apr. 1

How do I diagnose the problem. Eliminate distributer, coil, timing belt etc. Thanks.

You said that you tested the electrical components with a screw driver. I would start by using a more reliable tester. Start with the plugs and work your way back. If there is no power to the plugs examine the cap and rotor, change them if you see any cracks or carbon tracks, it is routine maintenance anyway. If it still fails to start check to see if there is power to and from the coil. If there is power to but not from the coil you have a defective coil and it needs to be changed. Check all of your wires starting at the coil and replace any that are cracked or look old. If none of these are the problem then loosen the distributor and turn the body as nessary to start the engine, then ADJUST THE TIMING AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
