Engine Cooling problem
1988 Mazda b2200 4 cyl Two Wheel Drive Manual 264k miles

My 1988 Mazda 2200 is overheating, my hoses was tight.I took it to a radiator spec. And he tried to flush the radiator and said it was stoped up bad and he couldnt even fix it. So I bought a new radiator and thermostat. And still the same problem. So my quistion is is it my water pump or my headgasket.(My hoses are real tight so that makes me think that my waterpump is trying to pump water through the system) Am I right by saying my water pump is fine?

Hi there,

The hoses are tight because the coolant is expanding when it heats up and the pressure cap is doing its job and holding pressure, there are a few tests that can be done to check for a head problem, the best test is a chemical test of the coolant gasses, this will detect exhaust gasses in the coolant, this is a sure sigh of a head or gasket problem, if this is the cause you should be loosing coolant and you may have a rough idle or a misfire as well.
