Engine Cooling problem
2001 Mazda 626 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

I have a 626 with 88K miles on it, recently the temp gauge has been very sporadic, going up to the H when I am idling or driving around town in stop and go traffic for any period of time. Once I am on the freeway it is goes back to normal. I took the car in for oil change service and the tech said it could be the thermostat, fan, or water pump. I have noticed that the A/C blows hot air whenever the temp gauge goes up to H.

I am afraid when I take it to a mechanic they will automatically tell me the most expensive repair is necessary - I think that would be the water pump?

I appreciate any advice. Thank you so much.

Confirm that the cooling fan is coming On-if so for a start replace the thermostat-if its a water pump problem the engine will overheat in less than 5 mins-

One way to test for a bad water pump is to squeeze the upper radiator hose when the engine is hot and idling. Careful, because the hose will be HOT! If you do not feel much coolant circulating through the hose when you rev the engine, the pump may be bad. The other cause might be a bad thermostat that is not opening properly (remove and inspect the thermostat), or a clogged radiator.
