Unfortunately there are a lot of things that can cause a car to do that. If the service engine light is on, get it scanned at the local car parts store (AutoZone, Advance Auto, and O'Reilly do it free) and get the code numbers and post them here.
If there are no codes, then you could have a vacuum leak going on, or a leak in the intake manifold/gasket, or even just low fuel pressure. A vacuum leak is an easy thing to check for. Here is how:
