The ABS computer monitors a number of things and memorizes a diagnostic fault code when it detects a problem. The computer turns on the warning light to let you know there's a problem, and it shuts the system down.
When you start the engine, a self-test runs. If the warning light does not turn on until the car has been moving, perhaps up to a mile, suspect cracked tone rings by the wheels. If the light comes on rght away, the code(s) will have to be read by a mechanic with the proper equipment to access the ABS computer. The code will lead him to the circuit or system with the problem, not necessarily the bad part.
