rear differential leak

'01 lincoln navigator v-8 2wd with 77,000 I was told I have a small leak in the rear differential. What could cause this? What is the repair work and average cost? :wink:

where is the leak coming from, could be a bad gaske or bad plug or seal.

the leak is in the rear; on the center bottom of the large mechanism between the axels. Thanks for taking the time to answer :) I appreciate it.

Is there a drain plug at the bottom, if so the plug may be loose or stripped, if not the leak is probably coming from a bad gasket.
