A vacuum leak will make an engine run too fast. Look for rubber vacuum hoses that are loose, disconnected, dry rotted, or cracked. Sometimes leaks will show up by spraying water from a spray bottle onto the engine while it's idling and still cold. You'll see the water getting sucked in and the engine will slow down when you spray the leak.
