Same thing happened to my 97 Continental. After they replaced the fuel pump and filter I thought it was fixed but it happened again 3 days later. They finally fixed the problem by replacing the crank case sensor and I have not had the problem since.

[quote:550488befd="hannjo"]Then the only other things I know of are the coils, the fuel pump and filter, the onboard computer, or a bad crank case sensor that was installed. If it is still not starting you will have to get it diagnosed by a computer to really pin point the problem. The way it sounds is the sensor again. With mine it would not start but when it was towed to the garage it started when they droped it off. Then it took a few days before they could get it to not start to diagnose it. If you have spark and fuel pressure then I think its the sensor again. I beleive that the sensor is under $40 at the parts store and if you know where it goes and can replace it yourself it may save you some more heartache.[/quote:550488befd]

Thank you. I appreciate your help. I know for my car, at least, we've had the crank sensor replaced at least twice when my parents still owned the car. Then a mechanic fixed something in the wiring last November. It's just irritating to have to keep replacing that part. I hope to get it fixed, then sell it so I can get a better car.

Discovered the problem was with the battery. It won't hold a charge. The alternator has been ruled out. Someone said on another site (that I'd have to pay to ask the question :P) that an interior light could be left on. All my interior lights shut down EXCEPT my digital compass set in my rearview mirror. Even when I take the keys out of the ignition, that compass stays on. I can often see the green glow it makes at night when I'm outside my car. If it possible that this could cause such a drain?

THE ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT WON'T START

Disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine -have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors- Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

Electrical problem
1997 Lincoln Continental V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I recently tried to install an aftermarket cd player in a friends 1997 lincoln continental. Now the car won't start. I have checked the fuses, both under the hood and under the instrument panel, and replaced all blown fuses. There were 3 in fact, and honestly I have no clue what they went to because unfortunately he no longer has the owner's manual. Is there any help you can give me in figuring this problem out?

Does the engine turn over at all???

If so, then it's quite possible that you created a voltage spike that destroyed the computer.

First disconnect the negative bat cable for 5-min. Hopefully this will reset your computer.

If the engine still doesnt' start, then check for spark. If there's spark, then check fuel. (Injectors firing and fuel pressure)

If there's no spark/fuel, then see if the computer is sending voltage to the respective systems. If it isn't, then you fried your computer.

If there is, then proceed with a regular "No Start" problem.

Engine Mechanical problem
1997 Lincoln Continental V8 Front Wheel Drive Automatic 160000 miles

1997 Continental has been running choppy for about 3 months. Recently (last 2 months)when i start it up it has stalled 3-4 times. Now it will not start at all. The idle has been running high as well during that time, holding the rpms at 950 while in drive with my foot on the brake. I recently replaced the IAC thinking that may be the problem. Also this car has the traction control option which sits on top of the normal throttle body, and the sensor for that system is broke, as well as obsolete. My question is if the trac. control is disabled and the butterfly valves are open, am i dealing with a sensor that is not allowing my car to start? The fuel pressure is ok, the wires are one year old, but I am not getting spark at the wire.Any ideas?

Engine Mechanical problem

I also have a 97 Lincoln Contental that wont start sometimes. It sat in a parking lot for 3 days and would not start, then they towed it and it started when it got to the shop. They replaced the fuel pump and filter. 2 weeks later it would not start again and when it was towed to the shop it started again. Getting an electrical diagram will not help if you dont know what to look for and replacing items is a hit and miss deal. Any mechanics have the same problem found out what is really wrong and what to fix?

all the time. only thing is you cant find out what is wrong with it is if you cant reproduce the problem you cant find out what is wrong with it

you should get a fuel pressure and spark test done when the vehicle will start and comparte it to when it wont start.

does it crank when it wont start?

Yes, it cranks but wont catch. When it happened for the garage the were able to place a computer on it and found the only thing wrong was low fuel pressure. Thats when they replaced the fuel pump and filter.

The car repair shop finally isolated the problem to the crank case sensor. They originally replaced the fuel pump and filter but it did it again after 3 days. After the crank case sensor was replaced it has not happened again.

97 Lincoln will not start but cranks good. I have had it towed to the shop and each time after being towed it starts. The fuel pump, crank shaft sensor, fuel relay and spark plugs have all be replaced. Car has 86,000 miles. I am getting ready to have it towed again - any advice?

I noticed one day walking that I had a hose hanging from under my gas tank. I tried jum starting it , it turned over at the click of the key, didn't notice the fuel pump engaging. Don't think anything happened. Everything else worked fine. Nothing dimmed.

Drove home parked it for the nite, no start in the morning. Tried a couple of different times over a couple of days and charged up the battery but no luck.
Swapped pcm relay. no change. Have not given the gas tank a whack yet to jog the fuel pump if that is it.
I have an extra crank sensor(friend did it on my sons 97 conti even though it didnt need it when it needed for a cam sensor)
I need to know where to find it and the quickest way to change it...it is single digits out there.
If you have other ideas about what else to check let me know

Can scan codes later(dont have one, but brother does and will bring it)...dont have a way to test for fuel pressure, but i can check to see if there is any at the relief valve. I think to reset the theft system i can put the key(this is an unchipped key system) and lock then unlock the drivers door.

Have pressure at rail schrader valve, unable to test now.
I am by myself and cant hear the fuel pump pressure up though and wacking the tank with the key on did not produce any additional noise or result.
Also, locked and unlocked the door with the key and the combination code with no result.
Still want to know where the crank sensor is exactly as it is something i can do while waiting for my brother to come, it eliminates one more thing if it doesnt solve the problem.

I also think that if the CPS is faulty i may not get spark and or fuel thanks to a feedback circuit. I am not sure about that, but if true, the other tests mean i need to check/change it anyway.

I just had this happen with my expedition & it was the fuel pump, so of course this is my suspicion for this vehicle. Tank is 3/4 full.
What/how can i test for power to fuel pump. and spark?
What else can i check/do before i call to have it hauled off.
Luckily, when my truck it died it was at my brother in laws shop. Not so lucky this time(and all of 2 weeks aprt).
I have tried hitting the tank with a jack handle a few times to see if the fuel pump would kick on(assuming it was that) but that didnt work.
Where in the tank is the pump-so i get a closer shot.

New fuel filter a few thousand miles ago... Has been running great with no service light/no codes. I do not hear the fuel pump.
It here a fuel bleed valve under the hood to check for pressure?
The book does not show a fuel pump fuse or relay. Possibly PCM diode?/Relay?/Fuse? I know how to check the fuse. How do i check diode? I am hoping there are other relays i can sub to see if that cures it after i press the fuel pump reset button in the trunk.

Car did not start on multiple attempts on friday afternoon. Sunday morning i had a chance to go back with tools and info. Very first thing was to put jumper cables on it to boost up the cranked down battery. Then i popped the trunk and checked the fuel shut off-not popped & shut off the sir ride so i could hear the pump-maybe. I then checked fuse 11 inside the car and the fuses, diode & relay under hood-swaping them for identical matches in the fusebox. Then i pushed on the bleeded on the fuel rail, it spit and ran a little. then i popped tha gas cap & asked my wife to listen for fuel pump when i turned key on-she didnt & neither did i, but then i went one farther and the car started and then ran fine for 20 miles to my brother in laws shop. I am considering doing the fuel pump and the crank pos sensor. Any other ideas?

Lets do below for a start to determine if its fuel or spark related issue and get back asap.

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it
