Hi, this car has always done this my dad bought it new. Yes, it was outside but no trees around. The pollen filter was old but clean and is now new.
When I took the car I put in a thermostat from Honda with housing. Due to what I thought was lack of heat. I have had four surgeries, so troubleshooting has been slow. I noticed today the lower hose where the thermostat is, and it was cold. Or at least warm compared to the top. Approximately 5-7 miles ride temperature gauge in the middle and not overheating. Heat was lukewarm If I turn the car off for 2-5 minutes IE run into a store. I start the car and the heat is hot. Same as before the thermostat was changed. Only because it gets hot I ruled out the heater core, also the hose is equal temperature.
I worked on cars for many years and found cars with thermostat in lower hose takes forever to circulate. Subaru comes to mind. I have no air in system 100% sure. Or is it possible the wind when I drive is cooling the housing?
Am I missing something? Is this a common problem?
Although two different cars my 2002 Civic blows my Accord heat away. Any help or direction to turn is appreciated. Neil

Hi,

The idea that both heater core hoses are hot leads me to think it could be related to the air mix door actuators. Are both sides (passenger and driver) sides of the vehicle equal in temperature?

See pic below. If the heater core hoses are hot, then we know the coolant is flowing, so the heater core should be hot. Therefore, heat is there but not making it into the cab. The air mix door actuators are what control the temperature entering the cab. Have you checked to make sure they are fully operating?

Let me know. See pic below.

The ducts are equal temperatures. When I refereed to the heater hoses being equal temperature. I meant both were warm then became hot. I just don't know why the lower hose stays cold for so long being it has the t/stat in it. I see others online with the same complaint. I see my car has or may have an in-car temperature sensor. Can that be tested, or should I say how can I test it?

Hi,

The temperature sensor in the vehicle is for automatic climate control. It is located at approximately the center of the dash. See pic 1.

Pics 2 and 3 explain how it's tested.

The last pic is for the removal and replacement of the sensor.

Let me know if this helps or if you have other questions.

Take care,

Joe

Neil,

That sensor isn't part of the manual system. At this point, even though you don't feel the heater core could be partially plugged, I would try flushing it. It may be allowing coolant to slowly enter (hot after sitting) but not fast enough to keep the core hot when the fan is on.

Let me know your thoughts.

Joe,

Please re read my original post/question it's detailed info on my problem. I have done all that you suggested. Checked flow 2 new t/stats etc. If I drive long enough the heat works great. I have read on other Honda sites the same complaint. Is there any TSBs on this problem or is this an inherited problem with this gen Accord?

Hi,

I realize what all has been done. The idea that nothing is helping and that you get heat eventually leads me to think the heater core is the issue.

When you drive it and it reaches operating temperature with little heat, are both heater core hoses hot?

I checked for HVAC technical service bulletins. Everything is AC-related. See pic below.

Let me know if both hoses are hot when you have little heat.

Joe
