Thank you for your reply. I was told that the condition of the catalytic converter would cause the worn part to heat up and cause the vehicle to catch fire. When I inquired about the parts from locations other than the dealer, I was given a laundry list of parts (over $1000 worth) that were needed to replace the catalytic converter, and install a oxygen sensor and a warm up catalytic converter, estimated repair cost at the dealer was $2300 exluding the sensor and and warmup catalytic converter.
To answer your question, I believe that both the complete converter system including the pipes, gaskets, nuts needed to be replace.
Since my posting, I have donated the vehicle to a group of young men in Clinton Maryland who are in the startup stage of a business refurbishing junked vehicles.
