When I shift from D-R or R-D, the u-joints thunk or clang with varying intensity. The dealer lubed the joints (yoke) and said noise was normal. I've driven many cars for many miles and never had a noise like this except for one car where the u-joints broke on the road. Is a fairly loud noise normal? Should I insist on them changing out the u-joints?

Thanks,
Ed

Honestly, a slight noise can be considered normal. However, it shouldn't be too loud. Check to see if there is play in the joint itself. If there is, replace them. Also, keep in mind the noise can come from other things such as a transfer case or a differential.
