2004 Kia Rio Fuel problem I think?

My car starts rough with a slight knock, the check engine light is on, acceleration is very sluggish until the car warms up and then it seems to accelerate fine. (Perhaps this is coincidental but the exaust seems a touch heavier than normal with a white color to it). I just changed the oil/filter after the first sign of problems and replaced the air filter. Please help we have very little money and are dependant on this car. I will attempt to fix this problem myself if I'm not way out of my league. Am I nuts to think this is a fuel filter or pump problem?
Where and how shall I proceed? What is the most likely culprit given these symptoms?

I am suprised how few answers there are to peoples questions. Perhaps if you gave away answers for free word of mouth would increase your traffic which would increase your ability to make money via advertising. Not to mention that donations would be more likely due to the larger volume of site traffic. So perhaps you could start by answereing the above question?
