Wife driving down the road, got about 1/2 mile down the street and it shut off. She says it just quit but all the dash lights come on. She turns the key and no click. She waits 10 minutes and it cranks up and she drives it back to the house. I just had TPS, throttle body, and changed fuel pump. Battery is only a couple of months old.

We need to start with checking for codes. This could be a number of things but we need to see if there are codes before we start testing or replacing anything so we don't waste time or money if there is a code that points in a the right direction.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/checking-a-service-engine-soon-or-check-engine-light-on-or-flashing

If there are no codes then we need to drive this to start to see how often it does this. If it doesn't act up then I am not confident that we will be able to guess at what it is. Not only do we not want to guess but we would have no idea if it is fixed unless it never does it again, and that is not the best thing.

Let us know what codes if any and we can go from there. Thanks

If the check engine light did not come on, would it still pop a code?

Normally no but it is possible. We need to check just to rule it out. I have been burned too many times to just make assumptions. We need to go through each step and confirm what we are assuming so that it is no longer an assumption.

Sorry about that, the scanner shows P0337 and pending code of P0456. I have a YA201 OBDII Enhanced Code Scanner, if this is necessary.

This makes a little more sense. This code is for your crank signal has low voltage. Unfortunately as you can see from the code info Kia did not provide detail about this code but this would cause the engine to shut off and not restart. Basically if the PCM looses the crank signal it doesn't know the position and it shuts it down. It will not restart because when you turn the key on it is not seeing proper voltage and so it prevents the start.

If it were me, I would replace the crank sensor and then retest for this code. I also attached testing for the sensor if you would like to run through that as well.

Thanks, I will give it a try. It's going to be a task to replace because this Kia requires you to remove the face of the engine to get to the sensor to replace. The hardest part is the harmonic balancer, Looks like it is time to have some fun.

Haha. Yes. Unfortunately Kia is one that buries this sensor. Please let us know how you make out. Thanks

I went out today to crank it but it would not start. Cranks as if the timing chain is broke. Could it just be the crankshaft position sensor is totally gone since the other day? I know chain is good.

Yes. It could be the sensor, wiring to the sensor, or the engine controller. Unfortunately there is no easy way to test the crank sensor unless your scan tool will read live data. If it does, can you watch the engine RPM in the PCM and see if it registers an RPM when the engine is cranking.
