My thief system will not let my car start. can the key be tested to know if the tumbler needs replacing or repaired?

Hi,
Which type of key does the vehicle have? Is it a standard type with a chip, a key fob and so on.
Also, try this. Turn the key to the run position and allow it to stay there for approximately 10 minutes. See if the security light turns off and if the vehicle will start.
As far as testing the key, if it has failed, there should be a diagnostic trouble code related to an unreadable key.
