Several things can cause the fuel pump to fail. The fuel pump not being used for a long time would be one reason. Bad fuel or contaminated fuel would be another reason. Running the tank low or out of fuel will damage a electric fuel pump as well. A dirty fuel filter will cause the fuel pump to work harder than it should and will cause it to wear out prematurely. Also check to see if the pump is even getting power, it may be a fuse or something other than the actual fuel pump.
