Yes, if a stereo is not properly hooked up, it could cause some issues. Things to check are proper grounding of everything, bare wires rubbing from the battery, any other wires rubbing. What is happening is you are having a short somewhere that is causing you coil to burn out. You will have to trace all wires leading to that feed the coil to see if there is any obvious sign of trouble. If a stereo was put in around the time if the issue or a little while before hand, this may be an indication of your source.
