Fuel pump?

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee - I am having problems starting my jeep. When I try to start the engine the first time, it will never start. Then on the second start it always starts, right up and it runs great after that and there is no problem while driving. I took it to an auto repair and they checked my battery, starter, and alternator. The parts were all good. He then checked the pressure in my fuel pump, once the jeep is started, it holds pressure around fifty pounds. Then when the jeep is turned off, the pressure slowly decreases; over about an hour’s time it is back to 0 pounds of pressure. Would the problem be my fuel pump? Or could I just need the fuel filter replaced? One more thing, are there fuel regulators on the 2001 jeeps? Thanks for your help.

Double check with your dealer to be sure as some manufacturers will combine the pressure regulator with the fuel filter. Can't hurt to replace the fuel filter either way if it is original.

You could also have a leaky fuel injector. A can of injector cleaner won't hurt anything and could help. Do you notice any smoke on startup?

If it is not holding pressure and you find no leaks (external or injectors) check with the dealers parts service and see if it has a seperate check valve that can be replaced or if it is part of the pump.

In the interim turn your key to the on position (not start) and listen for the pump to run. Shut it off when the pump finishes and then try to start it.

Good luck and let us know. :)
