What sensor, if bad, will cause an erratic and high idle cold and hot and a major shift in the transmission shift points?

It might be a bad ground on the sensor in question, but I need to know which sensor it is.

Not that easy. Is it fuel injected or carb?

It is multi port fuel injected. It has a distributor. Timing is electronically controlled.

The problem is intermittent, I'm just trying to target the problem without attaking the entire electrical system with a multimeter.
