Hi:
THe drive shaft should be dry. I believe there is a slip joint that is greasable, but that is it. Unless you are refering to the axle that has a CV joint at each end covered by a rubber boot. If the boots are not ripped, the joints should be okay. Also, when they go bad, they usually make a clicking noise.
I want you to check something. First, make sure there is no play where the front drive shaft attaches to both the differential and the transfer case. Next, make sure the backing plate behind the rotor isn't bent or rusted and making contact with the rotor as it turns.
