why does the veh. info. center on my 1996 V-6 Jeep Cherokee Grand Laredo say lift gate open when it is closed?

Check the liftgate switch, could be the switch or wiring circuit. Could be other issues as well. In the diagram, the switch circuit is open when liftgate is closed, the switch circuit is closed when liftgate is open. That's the way I understand it.
The bcm knows if the liftgate is open or closed, if open, the bcm sends message to vehicle information center. Again that's the way I understand it.
I realize this is an old post. You probably no longer own this vehicle. In the future hope you have no vehicle issues, but, if you do, keep the site in mind. They are always working to improve the site and it's free.
