As you have the trim off, locate the rod that activates the lock mechanism from the external handle, pull this up or down depending on which way it operates, also check that the pin lock button is up, you should be able to trigger the lock with a screw driver, you may need to remove the other door trim to see how it all works as I cant find a decent pic to post, will do so if I come across one.
