I just replaced the left front brake caliper and front pads on my XJS and bled the system twice. Now have brake pedal issues. With engine off the pedal is solid and high. With engine running the pedal is unpredictable. At times it goes nearly to the floor and seems like only one circuit is operating. Pumping the pedal helps. Other times the pedal feel and braking is good. The power assist system seems very complex. Is there something I missed?

You most likely need a new brake accumulator. It's that little oval
piece of metal in the right rear of the engine compartment that looks
like an old toilet bowl float. If you have never had it replaced, it is probably time. My brakes were bottoming out last year after several hard pumps, and my mechanic replaced the accumulator.
It costs about $400 plus labor. Don't try to replace it yourself unless you have seen one done, as it can make a hell of a mess.

Hope that helps.
