Just bought a 97 XJ6 and worked out that a fuse had blown because the rear right light wasn't coming on when the lights were turned on, but when I open the trunk the 2 trunk lights are on as I open the trunk but they go off when I lift the trunk more than about 10 inches. Also the licence plate light on the same side is out, I have changed the bulb and the only response I can get is when I touch a screw driver to one side of the bulb and to the car body, the light comes on, like it is not earthed properly.I just thought the trunk lights and the licence plate may be connected. Your help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like your problem is 2 fold.
1 trunk lights. Sounds like a bad or misadjusted switch. The switch should be mounted on the right side trunk lid hinge where the wire harness goes down. You should be able to work this switch with your finger and turn the lights on and off. If problem persists, I would change the switch.
2 right tail and lic. Light. With lights on, take a test light check for voltage + and - on both terminals of both lights(lic & tail). If power the lights should work. If not, check + term. To ground. If you have power, trace back your grounds ( black wire) and and redo or replace. If no power, check fuses in right side panel and center console panel. All fuses good? Then I would suspect the right side control module in the trunk. Hope this helps.

James or should I call you JAGGENIOUS?
Awesome, that was worrying me because I have inspection in a couple of months and that as far as I know, one licence plate light, would be a fail. As soon as I get a chance I will get on these now I have some knowledge and guidance. I will let you know how I get on James. THank you again so much.
Phil

COOL! Let me know, Jim Jaguar, with the Lucas electrical system, is relay and module crazy. If you are driving down the road and you have to scratch your nose, somewhere in the car there is a relay for it!
