Engine will not run

I have tried almost everything. replaced the ECU, mass air flow meter, starter relay, cold start injector relay, cold start injector, fuel pump relay, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, checked the HT coil and the main solenoid, repaired fuel line damage, cleaned out the fuel rail and fuel injectors (all six of them) checked (tried to) the engine position sensor, engine temp. sensor and the engine will still not run.
There is even compression over all six cylinders (85-93 Psi with out gas peddle pressed).

The engine will only start when REALLY cold and run for only a few seconds, after that one or two cylinders will fire intermittently.
I have tried to check the timing but failed
I am out of ideas,

I have been down the street you are on with my '88 XJ6. It takes special epuipment to test the crank position sensor. Only the dealer can do it. Change the CPS, and it'll pop right off. Hope this helps. The sensor is about $90.00 through the aftermarket.

Ok prince, I am a jaguar mechanic, I also have a 86 series 3. Have you fitted a new coolant temp sensor, a 2 wire bosch sensor, 19mm socket size, fitted in the manifold.2nd test would be to buy an injector tester node light, mosy autoparts stores have such a tool, or use a 12 volt test light inseted in each connector in the disconnected injector electrical connector, see if it flashes when the engine is turned over. That will tell you if the injectors are getting a signal. Theres a injector resistor pack fitted on those vehicles. And have you checked for a spark, at the plugs, theres an ignitiom module thats bolted to the inlet manifold that can fail. Test for injector signal, at the connectors, and spark at the plugs. Let me know.M

1985 Jaguar XJ6 V8 Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I am trying to start a jaguar/1985/j6 series 3?
I'm getting the vehicle from someone who's let it sit for
a year, hovever thay advise never having problems with
it stating before. I know the battery is good, the engine
cranks good, confirming that the starter is good, but it
will not turn over. I'm not sure how to check rather the
engine is getting fuel, I'm not sure how to check the
ignition system to confirm proper spark. I've worked on
cars a little maybe a starter, or altanator, or belt, Yet i'm
by far no pro. I'll be honest, PLEASE HELP

Get a helper disconnect a sparkplug wire or 2 and ground it to the engine atleast 3/16 away from ground-have helper crank engine over-do you have a snapping blue spark? If so-you have a fuel related problem, check the fuel pressure to rule out the fuel filter/fuel pump/pressure regulator and listen to the injector/s are they pulsing or hook up a noid light. No snapping blue spark continue to troubleshoot the ignition system-power input to the coil/coil packs, coil's resistances, distributor pick-up coil, ignition control module, cam and crank sensors and computer Note: If it doesn't apply disregard it

If both fuel and spark is present-check the valve and ignition timing, this will lead you to problems
with compression and valves opening and closing at the wrong time/broken or jumped timing

Electrical problem
1985 Jaguar XJ6 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

I am looking @ buying this Jag, the current owner has tried to repair wipers that were not working, and as a result the other instruments have failed.

Also the car has been in storage for 2 years and when trying to start it, it turns over ok and tries to fire up but won't, it could be as simple as a fuel filter but I thought I'd check with you.

Can someone please give me an idea of what is wrong and the possible fix.

To whom it may concern, have you tried spraying starter fluid into the throttle body to prime the motor. Also check to see if the fuel pump is coming on when the motor is been cranked. Get back to me, and let me know the outcome. Good luck!

I tried the starter fluid trick, and it ran on that for a short while. I have checked the power to the injectors and it isn't 12 volts, much less. What could cause that? The fuel pump is new and so to the filter. I had the computer looked at by an electronics guy and he said nothing was blown in that, so I am lost. I have ordered another computer (ECU) from the US just in case it might be that but now I'm unsure.

Hi Brendon, How are things in Australia? I trust all is well with you. As to the Jaguar I've been there before, and I beleave if you replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor your problem should be solved. It takes a lot to kill the Computer in those cars. Give this a try before replacing the Computer. Get back to me with the outcome, and Good luck! P.S you may have to spray some starter fluid to get it started or may be not.

Hi Bentley,

Thank's for your advice,

Perth has been hot lately, 40C yesterday, 33C today and rain and 24C Wednesday & Thursday, all the seasons in a week. You would be heading for spring, the weather must be getting nicer there, although the news here says there is a lot of snow in the US.

Anyway, the previous owner has had a play with the Airflow meter (the lid comes off nice and easy), but I assumed that it was working when the engine started on the petrol sprayed in the air intake.

With the low voltage on the injectors. Would that be caused by, the airflow meter? I just noticed that it has an electrical plug on the side of it, is it attached to the computer too?

The Jag's wiring seems simple enough, but I'm not up to speed with it enough to trouble shoot. I ordered a computer last week, but I will try to get hold of the air intake too, not many of them on ebay.

My car will turn over and act like its going to start and then cut off and die. Recently the muffler fell off. I also smell a hint of gas when I start the car. We recently replaced the starter cylenoid, and coil. Could it be the fuel pump? Ignition switch? How can I test the fuel pump from home?

Hey Brendanf, I feel you on the weather. Spring is around the corner for us here in Charlotte N.C, Hey not to worry your warm weather is also around the corner so hold tight. Now as to the Jaguar, the Ignition Amplifier only supply spark for the engine. If spraying starter fluid gets the car running till the fluid burns off rule out the Ignition Amplifier. Try this, take the cap off the Mass Air Flow move the needle by hand and block it partly open, spray starter fluid into the throttle body and start the car. See if it stays running as long as the needle is blocked. Get back to me and let me know the outcome.

To whom it may concern, the muffler falling off, has nothing to do with the car starting. If you smell fuel when the car starts, check all your injector hoses and the hose comming from the tanks on the passenger side near the battery for leaks. To check the fuel pump, get a battery and jumper cables disconect the fuel hose at the fuel filter going to the motor place the hose in a container, clip the positive(+) cable to the positive(+) post on the fuel pump, and the negitive cable to where the trunk locks. You will find booth pump and filter under the floor board in the trunk. If fuel comes out as long as you have the power to the pump, then the pump is working fine. Let me know what happens.

Hey Brendanf, As to you question on the Ignition Amplifier location, its a square box just slightly above the distrubitor to the left if standing in front the car on the passenger side, if this helps any. Keep in touch.

-shouldn't the lid on the meter be air-sealed. If it comes off too easy, it might be letting too much air go in, after the flap closes.
Could be a vacuum problem, there, on the lid. Seal it up with silicone.

HI, I just received a Jaguar Xj6 from a friend. 1984 It will not start right after you turn it off. The battery is new but car has not been run in awhile. We did jump it but it took some time to charge and at one point it would die when taking the battery jumper cables off. Any suggestions would help. THANKS

Have the battery fully charged and load tested, also check the alternator charge rate, to make sure that it will charge the battery when running, if the battery is dead flat and the alternator is not working, the engine will shut off when you remove the jumper battery as there is insufficient voltage to keep the fuel pump & ignition system running.
