ADJUSTMENTS
VALVE CLEARANCE ADJUSTMENT
NOTE:Adjust valve clearance with engine cold.
Valves should be adjusted every 15,000 miles. With engine cold, remove valve cover. Ensure camshaft bearing cap bolts and nuts are tightened to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS TABLE at the end of this article.
CAUTION:Torque specifications for retaining nuts and bolts are different. Ensure proper torque value is used.
Position No. 1 piston at TDC of compression stroke. Measure clearance between rocker arm and valve stem on specified valves. See VALVE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE table. Adjust clearance if not within specification. See VALVE CLEARANCE SPECIFICATIONS table.
To adjust remaining valves, rotate crankshaft 360 degrees (one full turn) until No. 4 piston is at TDC of compression stroke. Measure valve clearance on specified valves. See VALVE ADJUSTMENT SEQUENCE table. Adjust clearance as necessary.
Replace valve cover gasket (if necessary). Before installing valve cover, apply sealant to No. 1 camshaft bearing cap-to-gasket surface and rear plug-to-gasket surface. Install valve cover.
