I wouldn't recommend clipping the spring, Think of a coil spring as a lever, the longer the wire the more leverage you have. So given the same wire material, and wire diameter. A shorter length will have less leverage and be stiffer (require more work on the part that is being moved).
What you can try is small diameter spring same length. Or an aftermarket custom shift knob with a different type of release, One she could us her whole hand instead of her thumb. ( Ask your local parts stores if they handle Honda aftermarket accessories.)
