With a manual transmissions there are a few options. The first being a worn/failed clutch. How does the clutch pedal feel? Does it seem to act the same way that it did prior to this problem? When was the last time the clutch was serviced?
Next would be an internal transmission failure. Either a gear with broken teeth or a broken input shaft. Not really something you can check without removing the transmission and tearing it apart.
Last would be an external failure, like an axle breaking or a CV joint internal failure.
To check this one is easier as you can turn the wheels and see the axle shafts. Then just reach in and see if they are solidly attached.
If you push the car in either direction will it start moving on its own, That might show you if it is a damaged gear.
