Intermittent will not start?

I drive a short distance, go for a walk, and when I come back, sometimes the car won't start. Sometimes it's completely dead (no play in brakes or steering wheel), sometimes it just won't turn over. Has always started eventually (so far).

Hi,

When this happens, does the starter engage and the engine fails to start, or does the starter fail to engage?

Also, does the check engine lamp stay on while the engine is running? If it does, then you should have the computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Most parts stores will do that free of charge for you.

Let me know exactly what happens. Also, let me know if this has ever happened when the engine is cold. If the starter does engage but the engine fails to start, my first suspect is a failing crankshaft position sensor. When they start to fail, often they will be adversely affected by heat. Once they cool a bit, they work again.
