When sitting idle car tempaerature gauge goes to hot side, but while driving the gauge stays in the middle. What causes this?

First ensure the gauge is correct. Is the engine actually overheating when the gauge is in Hot zone? If it is, it sounds like you have poor circulation of coolant. Faulty water pump, damaged radiator hoses and even a faulty radiator are a few common causes of this.
