I went to crank the truck, and being cold nature like it is it turned over I gave it a break and tried again and got nothing, but the radio. Then nothing. The ignition was just free spinning with no resistance like it usually had. So I figured it was the key lock cylinder, I replaced it and it still does the same thing. Is there something else in the column making it so easy for this key to turn? It is just not feeling normal.

This is typical of the ignition switch is loose or its mounting screws fell out. The switch is on the upper side of the steering column, under the dash. The mounting holes are slotted to allow for adjustment.

The rod that moves bake and forth when the key is turned does not move. I can crank it with needle nose by pulling the rod, but you are correct something is broke or lose. Now the guess is can I get replacement parts for such an old truck or is it easier to replace the steering column? And how do I get into the column to replace the parts if I find them? Ignition actuator and rack is what it is called.

I only had one column apart on a Dodge many many years ago, and I do not remember how that linkage worked. The switch design was the same.

Given the age of the truck and the really low failure rate of the system you are working on, a used steering column is an acceptable option. Look for a pull-your-own-parts salvage yard. Do a search for "Pull-A-Part" to see if they have a yard near you. I have been to sixteen of their yards. All are very clean and well-organized. Parts are inexpensive, and employees and other customers have always been very helpful and friendly.
