All my forward gears work, but when I shift into reverse, it won't go. How do I fix this problem?

Hi,

If the transmission is working properly other than reverse, chances are there is a pressure-related issue that prevents operation. This can be the result of a shift solenoid issue, pressure switch issue, a wiring issue, an internal problem in the TCM (transmission control module), or excessive debris in the valve body.

Because it can be caused by a few different things that will require the removal of fluid, pan, valve body, and the sensors/switches involved, I strongly recommend having the can-bus scanned to determine if there are specific diagnostic trouble codes stored in the transmission control module.

CAN stands for controller area network. Basically, the different computers/modules are tied together via a few wires. This type of scan identifies codes regardless of the module storing them. Here is a link that explains how it is done.

Let me know if this is something you can have done or if you already have. If codes are present, let me know what they are so I can better direct you.

Let me know if you have other questions, as well.

Take care,

Joe

Hi,

The idea of changing the transmission with a different one may not work. The trans is controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). As far as the bell housing, it should work, but there could be a difference if it is an older transmission.

Before doing anything, inspect the bolt pattern on the present trans and measure between mounting bolts to compare them. Also, is the fluid clean and full and have you checked for diagnostic trouble codes? Since it works properly in drive, there is a good chance it is a line pressure issue or an issue with the manual pressure valve switch (internal).

Let me know. Also, let me know if I can help in any way.

Take care,

Joe
