Last month I went into Goodyear to get a alignment done because my steering wheel was shaking and when that happens it is usually a alignment problem. Well unfortunately my tie rod was broke so I had to get that fixed so I did. After that my car drove okay for a few days then the shaking came back, but I also felt the shaking under my feet. I thought maybe a wheel bearing or a bad axle but after going to a few mechanics and doing research those were not the issues. I finally got into my local mechanic and had him test drive it and at first hes said I had a bad wheel, but after he looked under the car he showed me my rack and pinion was loose. He did not take a long enough look to give me more information he just just showed me how it was wobbling. Now currently my issues are the steering wheel is shaking and there is shaking beneath my feet. The steering is not bad I can turn fine but the steering wheel does not come back fully on its own it kind of slowly skips back to its original position. Also my car pulls to the right. Also, there is literally no noise. There seems to be a tiny leak from under the car but I was not told by anyone that there was a leak. My local mechanic said I could drive it another two years and be fine but I really do not see how that is true when my steering wheel is shaking and I feel shaking under my feet.

Good evening.

If your steering rack is loose, you should have it repaired ASAP. For a mechanic to tell you it is okay to drive is terrible. Your life and the life of others is at risk by driving this way.

Anyway, there are bushings that secure the rack to the frame that sound like they are worn out and causing the play and the wobble you have in the steering.

You need to go to a real technician who will make your car safe.

I attached a picture of the rack and number 70 are the bolts that go through the bushings for the rack. Those bushings may be the entire issue and are replaceable.

Thank you Roy for the response. I am not sure why he would say I would be safe unless there is something he knows that I do not know then from what you are telling me and what I have researched. I try not too drive it unless I work and even then I ask for a ride from family or friends. Unfortunately money is tight and I only have about $700.00 that I can spend. I do have a credit card through Goodyear but I am assuming they will over over charge me. Hard to find a good mechanic.

Those bushings can be replaced and should not be anywhere near the $700.00.

The bushings are available by themselves.

Check with your parts store for steering rack bushings.
