As a result of this issue is the check engine light on? There might be a transmission fault code stored in your vehicles computer as a result. First thing I would suggest is to check the automatic transmission fluid level. Here is a tutorial showing how to check the fluid level for an automatic transmission:

If the check engine light is on for your car to have a transmission fault code then I would suggest performing a CAN scan- Controller Area Network. This type of scan cover all systems in your car and can show any and all fault codes for your vehicle. Here is a tutorial showing how to perform a CAN scan:
