My car has a burning smell sometimes. When this smell appears the car starts losing power and it has trouble shifting. What do you think is wrong with my car and how much would it take to fix.

It is hard to tell. Can you tell where it is coming from? Has the check engine light ever come on?

I think that the smell is coming from the passenger side of the engine. Also when I loose power the break petal gets hard it almost feels like I don''t have breaks. The check engine light has never come on. My car only acts up when it is hot out side on days that it is cold it works fine.

The idea of the brake pedal getting hard to push tells me there is a vacuum problem. Your power assist is actuated by vacuum. If there is a loss of vacuum, you lose the power assist. Check the hose going to the brake booster to make sure it isn't broken, dry rotted, or coming off.
