We believe the timing belt is broken. It overheated and now it won't start. It souds as if it is not getting any compression. If it is the timing belt does this engine have interferance? Could it sink a valve? Or are there any hidden things that could be wrong with it.

This is an interference engine. One sign of a bad belt is the engine spins over faster than normal. Pull the cover off to see if it moves when cranking.

IF the belt is bad and it went out of time, chances are pretty good that it bent valves in my experience. The Hyundai's seem to be more susceptible to bent valves or worse than other companies. I have seen piston damage and head damage as well when they break.

IF it is bad, you can try to put a belt on and see if it is okay before it gets all put back together. IF it runs rough or still doesn't fire, probably have to pull the head if the compression is low.
