Lots of problems, think it might be a simple answer.

I recently bought a 2001 Honda Prelude SH. I have had it for about a week and have noticed several problems. First of all, I am getting about 14 and a half miles per gallon. The rev limiter kicks in at about 6500 rpm. The car has a rough idle at very low speed. The exaust backfires a bit. The VTEC doesnt seem to be kicking on (my friend thought I had the H23 engine when he drove it because he couldnt feel the vtec kicking in, but the block says H22A on it). And finally, the car has died 3 times for apparently no reason. I think 3 of these problems have to do with having a rather large cold air intake and a rather small muffler, getting too much air in and not letting enough out.I believe that would account for the low idle and backfiring and maybe the dying. What I think might have happened with the other problems is that the person who owned it before me had some other aftermarket mods on the car (I cant spot anything else under the hood) and took them off when he sold the car, but left the settings for the sensors(dont know what that is called, sensor mapping?) Modified for what he originally had on the car. I know that disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes is supposed to reset the computer so I dont know if there was a chip on the car or not. I was wondering if there was a chip on the car, would it account for these problems, or am I looking at more serious problems or maybe just needing to change a few sensors?

I have a 98. Is there an engine light on? What type of mods did the car have that you took off? Check to see if the ECU was changed or has a chip replacement? Clean the idle air sensor ( located next to the vtec part on the head. And replace the throttle body sensor. Not sure what to do with this. Do a compression check and leak check. Rev limit would be a sensor but if your light is not on. Then something is wrong with the electrical

Ok I drive hondas for years I currently drive a 96 integtype r, I had a 1500 vti hatch before that had similar problem, it had rev limit of 7500 but when I would reach 5000rpm it would kick back automaticly, now straight off I would think most definatly its your distributor. You see when the bearing goes it causes a whole host of problems, plus it contains sensors for engine management and coil. Firstly I cant say for definate that this is your problem, if the car was mine I would reach in under the passengerfoot well, and find the ecu `jump'terminal connector. Basicly contains two wires that you have got to bridge which then allows the ecu to sent the trouble codes to your dash clocks, but normally if there was an engine management problem it should already have displayed an engine check light on your dash which you didnt mention. Also im taking into account that you took the car out of common sense to a mecanic to do a compression test and hopefully rule out the possibility of a blown head gaskit, badly worn piston rings etc etc. Finally I would reccomend you checking the pressure regulator which is located on the fuel rail to make sure it is working, and maybe fuel filter under bonnett and vtec solonoid which you will find near the distributor, a good mecanic can chec to see if these work. Let me know how you get on! Besta luck!
