2000 Honda Odyssey Likelihood of transmission failing overn

The 3rd transmission in my 2000 Honda Odyssey failed with 37,920 miles on it (1,920 miles past the 36k mile warranty). I brought it to the dealer when it had 28k miles and told them I was feeling a jolt in the transmission when downshifting, but they said that they could not find anything wrong it. Four months later, when the transmission had 34k miles on it, I brought it to an Independent repair shop specializing in Honda’s and Acura’s, but they couldn’t find anything wrong with it either. Now at 37,920 miles, the transmission suffered a complete failure. The dealer and American Honda won’t do anything because the transmission failed “out of warranty".

Is there a way to examine the transmission and determine approximately how long ago it started to fail? I’m convinced that it had been showing symptoms of failing for at least the last 10k miles, but Honda is only focusing on the mileage where it actually dropped dead and saying “Sorry, there’s nothing we can do for you because the transmission is out of warranty. That’ll be $5,000 please."

What are the chances that the transmission really was fine at 36k miles when the warranty ended, and then completely failed over the course of the next 1,920 miles?

Hi rustyj,

There is no way to determine when the problem started and how long it took to result in a complete failure.

The only way you can request for a warranty is to use the reason of having reported to them at an earlier date and nothing was done to rectify the problem.

Usually transmisison don't fail immediately and if the transmission did not show any symptoms and for it to suddenly fail is almost impossible.

Where warranty is concerned, the date or mileage is the cutting point, Even if it had been 1 km out of the warranty, legally the warranty has expired and you are not entitled to any claims.

You can request for a goodwill warranty and hope the dealer obliges, saving you some money.
