Electrical problem 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 205000 miles

My "check engine" light came on sometime ago. I have not noticed any loss of performance or gas mileage. What kind of problem could I have to cause he light to come on and stay on? I don't know if it is relevant, but I have changed the oli generally every 4000 to 5000 miles with synthetic oil of proper SAE viscosity.

Check engine light has to do with an emission problem the car is experiencing. The codes in the computer need to be accessed to starting troubleshooting it.

Here is a guide to show you how to do it

Have the codes read, Autozone does it free, Post the results with the code number(s). Even if the service engine light is not on, there should be freeze frame data stored.
If it won't make it to Autozone, buy a cheap scanner, they can be had for 30-40 dollars, a good investment, since they cover all cars sold in the USA from 96 on.
If the light is blinking, it means possible damage to the converter. Service it right away!
