2001 Honda Odyssey Check Engine Light

I just returned from a 3000 mile road trip. During the trip I averaged between 26 and 31 miles per gallon. The engine performed flawlessly, yet the check engine light came on. I took it in this morning to Honda dealership and was told I need a new catalytic converter. How can this be?

Ther are sensors that monitor the efficiency of the converters, if one of those sensors sees a problem, it lights the light. Just because the efficiency is down, doesnt mean performance is.

Thanks. I appreciate your quick and honest answer. I tried to leave feedback but could not since I have no points to give. I will continue to drive my vehicle. If it fails an emissions inspection for registration renewal, then I will consider replacing the catalytic converter.

Good call. The long drive may have been a little too much for it when it was borderline. Around town the light may not come back on
